Education Standards Volunteers

At Sanders Hand Ghana, we are committed to improving the education of Ghanaian children by providing them with quality instruction, mentorship, and support. As a volunteer in our Teaching Program, you will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact by teaching in one or more local schools, working directly with students across a variety of subjects, and contributing to the overall development of education in Ghana.

Volunteers can choose to teach at different educational levels, including Primary School, Junior High, or Senior High, depending on your expertise, interests, and experience. Subjects can also be customized based on your area of knowledge, ranging from core academic subjects to extracurricular activities. Past volunteers have taught Mathematics, Science, English, Social Studies, and even Physical Education, while coaching local football (soccer) teams after school.

We also offer specialized volunteer programs such as the Colors of Hope Art Program and the Computer Training Program, both of which are integral parts of the Education Standards initiative. Whether you have a passion for the arts, technology, or traditional classroom subjects, there is a place for you to make a significant contribution to Ghana’s education system.

Program Terms and Flexibility

The school year in Ghana is divided into three terms, with some flexibility depending on the school. Volunteers are typically placed based on the school calendar, and can be assigned to schools for any of the following terms:

Each school has some freedom to adjust the calendar, including holiday periods, so there may be flexibility with dates, making it possible for volunteers to serve throughout the year. If you are staying for more than one term, you are welcome to continue staying at the Volunteer House or with a Host Family.

Key Responsibilities for Educational Volunteers

As a volunteer in the Education Standards Program, your duties may include:

Teaching Core Subjects: Depending on your background, you can assist or lead classes in subjects such as Mathematics, English, Science, Social Studies, Geography, History, and more.
Curriculum Support: Work with local teachers to develop and implement lesson plans, prepare teaching materials, and facilitate classroom activities. Tutoring: Provide extra help to students who may need additional support outside of regular class hours.
Extracurricular Activities: Volunteer to teach or support extracurricular activities, such as Physical Education, Art, or other clubs.
Coaching: Many past volunteers have taken on the role of coaching local sports teams, including football (soccer) and other activities, providing students with a chance to develop outside the classroom. In addition to traditional classroom subjects, Sanders Hand Ghana also offers art programs and computer training, allowing you to share your skills in technology, design, and creative arts to empower young learners.

Specialized Volunteer Opportunities

Colors of Hope Art Program: As part of our commitment to fostering creativity, we offer volunteers the chance to help students explore their artistic potential. Volunteers work with children to teach various art forms and provide opportunities for artistic expression.
Computer Training Program: This program focuses on digital literacy, where volunteers will teach basic computer skills, graphic design, web development, and introduce students to concepts like artificial intelligence. Volunteers in this program have the unique opportunity to help bridge the digital divide in underserved communities.

Requirements for Educational Volunteers

To be a successful volunteer in our Education Standards Program, the following are essential:

Fluency in English: As English is the primary language of instruction in Ghana, volunteers must be fluent in both spoken and written English.
Educational Background: Volunteers should have, or be working towards, a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. A degree in Education or a related field is preferred, though we welcome volunteers with expertise in other subjects or areas of specialization.
Creativity and Initiative: Volunteers should be able to adapt and lead classes with limited resources. Creativity, flexibility, and resourcefulness are essential when working in diverse environments with varying access to educational materials.
Passion and Enthusiasm: Volunteers should have the desire and enthusiasm to inspire children to set and achieve academic and personal goals. The ability to engage students and encourage their curiosity is key to ensuring a successful teaching experience.
